About

Maheno Aikido Oamaru is an Aikido dojo located 10 minutes south of Oamaru and is currently based in the Maheno Hall. We have been operating since 11th April 2015.

Aikido is a peaceful martial art that uses circular movements to neutralize an attack. Aikido emphasises effective techniques that do not depend on size or strength, so is suitable for all ages, women and men. As a non–competitive martial art, Aikido is learnt co-operatively with training partners. This allows the application of martial art techniques in a safe, non-aggressive and controlled environment.

Aikido is more than just a physical art. It is also a way of life that cultivates harmony, peace and compassion. Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba, often said that the true goal of aikido is to achieve “masakatsu agatsu katsuhayabi”, which means “true victory is self-victory, right here, right now”. Aikido encourages its practitioners to overcome their own limitations, fears and ego, and to develop their inner strength, wisdom and spirit1

Anyone wishing to try aikido is most welcome to come along. The first three lessons are free for anyone who would like to give it a go.
